About this Death Cafe

St Oswald’s Hospice, based in Gosforth, Newcastle is inviting people of the North East to have open conversations about death and dying, eat cake and drink tea in a supportive environment at their first death café.

The Hospice recognises that it’s not always easy to talk about death but it is something that will happen to all of us.

Davina Radford, Chaplain at St Oswald’s Hospice, said:

“Even at a Hospice, talking about death and dying isn’t always easy and we know conversations about death can be difficult. Death cafes happen all around the world so we are really looking forward to inviting our local communities in to St Oswald’s to support them in their conversations about death.

“The café is an opportunity to talk to others, have conversations about your wishes and hear the experiences of others. It is certainly not a grief or a bereavement session, it’s quite the opposite. Others have spoken of a death café being an uplifting experience, getting them to think about life and all the things they have achieved and what they want to do before they die.

“From my experiences it often makes decisions easier if conversations about death have been had and people have made their wishes known, some people even feel relief to have talked about things. Death has become a taboo topic but it is something that will happen to all of us. I’d recommend the death café to anyone - pop along for a couple of hours, have a cuppa and some cake and chat to other people in your community.”

The death café will be held on Saturday 2nd June, 10am-12noon at St Oswald’s Hospice, Regent Avenue, Gosforth, Newcastle, NE3 1EE. Free parking is available and refreshments will be provided.
