About this Death Cafe
The Death Cafe will run from 6.15 - 7.50pm and will be followed by an optional lecture about Cnacer Philosophy given by Dr. Okio Hino.
About Cancer Philosophy Clinic (in Japan) & Death Cafe (in UK)
Dr. Okio Hino set up free ‘Cancer Philosophy Clinic’ in 2008 where cancer patients and their families can talk about philosophical matters like seeking the meaning of life, and also the meaning of cancer for them in a relaxed atmosphere by drinking tea or coffee. His idea has now spread all over Japan. Dr. Hino also gives lectures on how he has found his own philosophy; seeing society from the views of a cancer cell.
Cancer Philosophy Clinic was started especially for cancer patients who are facing their own death or families’ who are facing the death of a loved one. Dr. Hino does one to one counseling as well as group counseling, whereas Death Cafe is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counseling session.
However, the objectives of Cancer Philosophy clinic and Death cafe are very similar, Dr. Hino's aim is to help patients live their lives fully even though they have cancer, and Death cafe’s aim is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their finite lives. Moreover, both have tea and sweets!
It is interesting that the similar movements happened in different places in Japan and the UK without knowing each other. This event provides a wonderful opportunity to meet and collaborate.
