About this Death Cafe

A Death Cafe is an event where people drink tea, eat cake and discuss death. Join us for a FREE cup of tea, slice of cake and a chat about life, death, and what really matters to you in an intimate and confidential setting.

The Death Cafe movement is spreading across the globe and aims to encourage people to talk about death and to make the most of their lives.

The Colchester Death Cafe is being held at Hollytrees Museum, Colchester as part of the "After Life" Exhibition (which is opens on Saturday 6 May and runs until November 2017).

Hollytrees Museum is open Monday to Saturday 10-5 and is free to enter.   ‘After Life’ examines the subject of death and the period following it, both for the deceased and for those who feel their loss using evocative objects from the Colchester museums’ collection.

Death Cafe visitors are welcome to enjoy the Museum when they visit and can expect to see a varied and engaging display, including many objects which had previously been in museum storage.

These include:

·         Several items from Roman graves which illustrate the customs of feasting at the grave and belief in an afterlife.

·         Victorian memorial jewellery, many pieces of which contain human hair as a way of remembering loved ones.

·         A selection of objects placed at the war memorial after the death of Princess Diana 20 years ago.

The exhibition also includes a section on death in Hinduism, informed by the Hindu community of the local area.

The Death Cafe is not a bereavement / grief support resource.

Attendance is free, but we do ask that you book a ticket if possible, so we can manage the numbers.

About Lee Jaschok and Emma Reeve

Lee heads up Freedom Funerals in Colchester which he founded on a deep-routed desire to help people during difficult times; aiming to deliver support, choice and value.

“We believe in the freedom to choose and that choice is as important in death as it is in life.  Death has traditionally been a taboo subject but we are known for our non-traditional approach and firmly believe that talking about death is a positive thing; not only helping us to cope with loss of a loved one, but it also encourages us to consider how to make the most of our lives.

Sharing stories and listening to others can inspire you to makes changes that bring a renewed zest for life, which can often diminish after a bereavement. I’d encourage anyone to come along for an evening of tea, cake and inspiring conversation that could change your outlook on life and death”.

Emma is Colchester's Collections and Learning Curator at Hollytrees Museum and is curating a new exhibition at Hollytrees Museum which is looking at death and the period following it, both for the deceased and for those who feel their loss. ‘After Life’ examines the subject using evocative objects from the Colchester museums’ collection.

Emma said “Death is a universal human experience which transcends time, culture and place. It can be an intensely personal experience but also bring communities together in shared grief and ritual. We hope this exhibition will give people a space to learn about and reflect on a challenging subject.”
