About this Death Cafe

Our objective is to increase awareness of death and help people make the most of their (finite) lives. We create time to discuss death without expectations. Although participants are welcome to discuss spiritual/religious aspects of death and dying, this event is primarily secular and does not represent or focus on any specific faith tradition. For those enduring a period of grief or bereavement, or for those that this might be a sensitive subject at the moment, the resources below may assist you; however, the purpose of a Death Cafe is not to be a support or therapy group. Instead, we come together to discuss the inevitable and collective process of our lives one day ending, without the intention of leading people to any conclusion, product, or course of action. No agenda will be set, and questions are encouraged!

A bit of history: The organization of Death Cafe was created by Jon Underwood of East London in 2010, who wanted a place where people could break the taboo surrounding death. As a non-profit social gathering, Death Cafe was inspired by the work of Bernard Crettaz, who wrote that "nothing marks to community of the living like sharing food and drink." The first US event was organized by Lizzy Miles, a hospice worker, in summer 2012 near Columbus, Ohio.
