About this Death Cafe

Most—but not all--people are averse to talking, or even thinking, about death. At our Death Café, we hope to offer a welcoming venue for those who do think about this important topic and want to share their thoughts. We hope they leave feeling enlightened, inspired, and stimulated.

About Hood College

This Death Café will be hosted by Emily Fair and Paula Grant, students of the graduate program in Thanatology at Hood College.

Prior to entering Hood’s Thanatology program, Emily Fair was a director in the area of operations change management where she guided programs in improving business processes, procedures, software/technology and customer experience. Ms. Fair has skill in the healthcare accreditation space, e-commerce, marketing and publishing. Much of her job was to sell people on change – on the idea of letting go of old processes and embracing new ways of doing things. She received her B.A. from Georgetown University in 1996 with a major in psychology and minors in sociology and anthropology. Emily is expected to receive her M.A. in Thanatology from Hood College in the Spring of 2016.

After a 25-year editing career in legal, medical, financial, and environmental publishing Paula Grant became a caregiver for her mother and mother-in-law until each of them died. That ten-year experience was life-changing, spurring her to focus on elder care pursuits, which have included working and volunteering at various profit and nonprofit organizations that serve the interests and needs of seniors. Before enrolling in Hood College’s Thanatology Program two years ago, it had been almost 25 years since Paula graduated summa cum laude from Boston University.
