About this Death Cafe

The hosts of this Death Cafe strongly believe that its time for Death to come out of the closet. Its time for us to take the taboo about the end of our lives; to begin the conversations that everyone needs to contemplate. We invite our friends and neighbors to join us for a delightful and stimulating evening of conversation and cake.

About Long Term Care Alternatives, Inc.

Long Term Care Alternatives, Inc. was conceived by 3 Social Workers who are passionate about opening up end of life conversations and fostering alternative housing options for the aging population.

Noreen Berger, LMSW  In 2012, I received a Masters of Social Work, with a Health Care Specialization from Stony Brook State University. While in graduate school, I had the opportunity to work with patients with cancer and the aging population. This experience prompted me to promote compassionate aging in place and end-of-life care. Throughout my life and professional career, I have adopted a philosophy that includes a proactive approach toward improving quality of life and advocating for those in need.  This July, I am looking forward to working as the Director of the Suffolk County Chapter for the National Association of Social Workers. Currently, I work as a hospice volunteer and at Sayville Project with members who are recovering from a serve and persistent mental illness.

Nancy Sorkow, LMSW returned to school and became a Licensed Master of Social Work after a successful career in other industries.  Nancy had a career in Retail Management including her own store in Park Slope Brooklyn. Nancy has a keen interest in Gerontology, and creating alternative options for Long Term Care.  Nancy is currently employed as a Caregiver Support Social Worker for Family Service League in Suffolk County.  Nancy is an active member of Gerontology Professionals of Long Island, the NASW, Aging Committee and a Board Member of the Atlantic Community Activity Center, a past East End Hospice Volunteer.  Nancy has recently been accepted into the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care Center Foundations program.

Karen Gillette, LMSW became a social worker after a successful career in Financial Management and Sales.  Karen has an avid interest in the healing arts, alternative options for Long Term Care and meditation.  Karen offers stress management workshops and education talks to non-profits and caregiver groups across Long Island.
