About this Death Cafe

We held the first Teesside Death Cafes in October, November and December in Linthorpe Middlesbrough in evening meetings.

We want to move round Teesside and offer the Death Cafe at different venues and different times. We are now going to try a series of afternoon sessions in Saltburn before considering moving on to another venue.

At our first meeting in October we had 19 people present - including people from Newcastle,  Peterlee, Darlington and Stokesley as well as Middlesbrough.

It was relaxed and informal, in a warm room with comfy chairs. People spoke of their experiences and concerns about death and bereavement, some of their hopes, raised a number of questions, and shared thoughts and feelings. Everyone felt able to speak, although no one was obliged to.

We began with introducing ourselves and what brought us, then we had some refreshments, followed by discussion of a number of topics. At one point, anyone who had not spoken was given the opportunity to say something if they wished to.

It ended promptly at 9, some stayed on to discuss informally over the washing up, and three people gave a lift in their car to the station to one young man.

The Teesside Death Cafe featured in Radio Tees and TFM radio interviews.
