About this Death Cafe

Age UK Derby and Derbyshire, G Wathall and Son a family funeral directors and Tim Dowdell a Humanist Celebrant are collaborating on this project

We consulted with local professionals and members of the public over the last few months and found there was a good level of support for holding a Death Cafe in Derby

About Tim Dowdell, G. Wathall & Son Ltd & Age UK Derby & Derbyshire

We often find that death is something which is not planned for, simply because the person hasn’t had the opportunity       to ask questions, discuss or debate in an open and frank manner. Therefore we support any opportunity for                   people to do this.’

‘As Funeral Directors we are involved with death every day but we understand that others sometimes find it a difficult subject to discuss.

We want to help people open up about their hopes and fears regarding death and dying, discuss the challenges of later life and get them talking.

Death is an important and interesting subject but so many people shy away from discussing it.

We thought by bringing it into the local community, at a café where everyone knows what they’re there to discuss, it will help to make the word “death” no longer out of bounds’.

‘The Derby Death Café provides a new opportunity for informal discussion of a topic many of us find very difficult. Both personally and as a Funeral Celebrant I know the importance of this. That is why I am supporting The Death Café, along with G.Wathall and Son Ltd and AgeUK Derby and Derbyshire.’

Tim Dowdell (British Humanist Association).
