About this Death Cafe

During this past year, Casa de Luz, has provided us fabulous space, spot on event support and the most delicious truffles while holding the Death Cafes at their wellness community.  I am grateful and thankful to Wayo, Lainey and Johanna for their generosity and friendship.

About Karen Van Dyke

Death has not been a stranger to me.   My Dad died when I was 8, my mother died when I was 24, my sister died two years ago and I was by her bedside when she crossed over.  Six years ago I kissed death with a diagnosis of breast cancer.  And my beloved dog Blackie stayed with me until he knew I was ok –  possibly one of the hardest deaths of all.

Early in 2013 a friend and colleague of mine sent me an email and said I think you should look at this…it was about the Death Café. Have you ever had something grab a hold of you that just wouldn’t let go.  That’s what happened I had to do this.

As an owner  of a senior housing placement business, I guide families through the journey of finding housing options for their loved ones when they can no longer stay at home. Families come to me in crisis and very  unprepared for this third age of life.   I thought there has to be a better way.   Then the Death Cafés appeared.  I thought the Death Cafe is a good way to help people prepare better for this part of life so they could celebrate life more with each other.  For more than 35 years the San Diego Community has been very good to me and this is my way of giving back to this city that I love so much.
